A Twist Of Noir 204 - KM Rockwood

PARTY SUPPLIES - KM ROCKWOOD

I yanked the shopping cart with the crooked wheel to a stop by the packaged salads. One of the girls—Mary?—started reading the label on a package.

“Just toss a couple in the cart and let’s go,” I said, wiping my nose with my sleeve. My shirt smelled of stale beer and motor oil. And it hung loose. Must be losing weight again. Not good.

“Some salads are healthier than others,” the other girl, Elizabeth I guess, said.

“Yeah, yeah. Salad’s healthy. Let’s go.” My arms itched. “Nobody’s gonna eat it anyhow.”

“Not iceberg lettuce,” Elizabeth said, ignoring my last comment. “It has practically no nutrients.”

I closed my eyes and leaned against the cart. These girls probably knew all about nutrition. They looked healthy, wholesome, vibrant.

My daughter looked like that. At least, she had the last time I saw her. Much younger, of course. Only seven. I’d missed the last few scheduled visits. They were supervised by a social worker. I hadn’t been in any shape to let a social worker see me. Gonna be a problem at the custody hearing next month.

Mary—or was it Elizabeth?—looked at the full cart. “Why didn’t the guys come in to help us?”

“Got to stay with the bikes,” I said, fingering the scar on my cheek. “Don’t want nobody to mess with them.”

She smiled. “Nobody’s going to mess with them.”

Probably right. The guys were in the parking lot, straddling the chopped Harleys, revving the engines and leering at passersby. Mamie and L’le Bitch had gone to stock up on Southern Comfort and Coors Lite. I’d come to buy food with these two. Tongo and Snake had picked them up somewhere. Most likely at the community college. Promised them a big-time party tonight.

They were taking forever choosing salad.

“Look.” I fidgeted, reaching to scratch my shoulder under the cutoff vest and club colors. “You might not want to come out to the clubhouse. Tonight’s party hardy, if you know what I mean. Might get rough. Really no place for ladies.”

Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed. “You’re going, aren’t you?”

“Yeah.” But I would hardly classify myself as a lady. “But the clubhouse is pretty isolated. You can get stuck out there. No cell phone reception. How old are you, anyhow?”

“Eighteen.”

That was probably true. Tongo and Snake would not pick up jailbait. Mostly we followed the laws anybody cared about when we could, and mostly the cops left us alone.

“I’ll tell the guys you changed your mind,” I offered. They’d be mad at me for letting them walk out, but they’d get over it.

“We’re old enough to make our own decisions.”

Mary put that package of salad down and picked up another one.

Could my daughter grow up to be like that? Healthy and confident and smart enough to go to college? With a real life in front of her?

Not likely to happen if I got custody.

I hoped these girls weren’t virgins. “You on the pill or something?” I asked.

Mary blushed. She patted the pocket of her tight jeans. “Condoms,” she said.

“It’s not gonna be like that,” I warned. “You won’t get the guys to use those.”

“We’ll insist they use condoms.”

I shrugged. “This ain’t no social club.”

Can’t make somebody see if they won’t open their eyes.

I shoved the cart toward the checkout. “Let’s go.”

“How are we going to pay for all this?” Mary asked.

“I got money.”

We couldn’t make it to the clubhouse fast enough for me.

Maybe I should just skip the custody hearing, give myself more time to get m act together before it was rescheduled. Or the next time the social worker called, I could tell her that I’d sign the papers so the foster family could adopt my daughter.

I might as well face it. If I loved my baby, I would want the best for her. Which meant no contact with me.

She might even turn out to be smart enough not to accept invitations to parties from people she didn’t know.

Maybe somebody was carrying a little snort of something I could snag out in the parking lot.

A Twist Of Noir 203 - Michael J. Solender

RESPIRATORY ARREST - MICHAEL J. SOLENDER

“Half a million dollars for a basic hit? What’s with that?”

“First of all, it is not a basic hit, he’s an underboss. Secondly, this hit will look like...a natural cause of death. No blood, no one else will get hurt. It'll be beautiful, the cops won’t even investigate. Trust me on this one. It’s bee-you-ti-ful! He does have severe asthma and breathing problems, right?”

“Yeah - why?”

“Because I need to engage the Viper for this hit.”

“The Viper? Whoaa, that’s gonna cost. Now I understand the half-a-mil.”

*

Lefty took a huge drag on his inhaler. An aging Mafia boss, he couldn’t keep up with the ways of the youngsters much longer. Arizona, where the dry arid desert would give his failing lungs a break and his grandchildren awaited him. Two more years in Jersey, then he could call it quits.

In the meantime, he wasn’t about to cede one inch in the latest turf wars. He’d made more than his share of enemies. But even the man upstairs rested on Sunday and Lefty couldn’t resist Mama D’s gravy.

His lungs were giving out and he enjoyed so few pleasures in life. He was more than content this Sunday to be savoring a big plate of Puntanesca. He was all too happy to dine alone, save his ever-present bodyguards.

*

He smelled her before he saw her. A sweet, sharp mix of Chanel, sex and just a hint of fiery perspiration. She walked in like she owned the joint. Slow, sleek and feline.

A long drink of water at 6’1”, the Viper was lithe, lean, and stacked. She sat down right across from him. His bodyguards were too stunned to even make a move. She was a goddess. Beautiful raven hair, hazel eyes, a gumdrop for a nose and legs that went deep into next week.

Lefty started to sweat. Under the table, she put her bare foot up against his swelling crotch and began to caress it slowly. He nearly passed out and started to hyperventilate.

He was breathing, or trying to breathe, very laboriously. Tiny, raspy, short rapid fire bursts of gasping for precious oxygen. It was like he was sucking through a straw with a lemon seed caught in the middle.

The aging Mafia boss was turning blue. His bodyguards started to move in but he waved them off.

He reached for his inhaler and the Viper deftly diverted his hand and placed it on her left boob, her foot still grinding away under the table. She looked him square in the eye and licked her teeth.

Lefty collapsed dead, right there, into his spaghetti. The Viper had taken his breath away.

A Twist Of Noir 202 - Jimmy Callaway

TWO HUNDRED - JIMMY CALLAWAY

“You’ve got two hundred words to explain yourself.” I cocked the hammer.

He whimpered and said, “No one was s’posed to get hurt, man. Bitch came to us,” he glanced at his dead buddy, “Said the old folks ran the store by themselves. Said they’d give it right up, they had no helpers or nothin’, they had a son, but he’s in the Marines, he’s long gone. And it was him, man,” another glance at his buddy, “he shot the old lady, she wouldn’t give it up. Bitch said she would, but she didn’t.” He looked up, counting in his head. “How many words was that?”

I pressed the barrel to his forehead. “Not enough.”

“Man, man, man, I ain’t never hurt nobody in my life, honest, ’specially not some old lady. It was him, man. And that bitch.”

“The bitch’s name.”

“Uh...”

“‘Uh’ counts as a word.”

He squeezed his eyes shut. “Angela!” he cried finally, “Her name was Angela!” He paused, counting. “Was that two hundred?”

“Close enough.” I shot him.

I got a pass back home to take care of my mother’s funeral. But now I need to arrange my sister’s funeral as well.

My sister, Angela.

ONE HUNDRED - JIMMY CALLAWAY

“One hundred dollars.”

He blinks. “For a beating?”

“Going rate,” I say.

He sighs. “Okay. But make it good.”

I make sure he gets his money’s worth. Now, when he tells his wife he got mugged, she’ll buy it, and he can go to the titty bar again next payday with a clear conscience.

I see his wife the next day. She palms a Ben Franklin to me as we shake hands. “I wasn’t sure about this, even after I hired you last week,” she says, “But you do good work.”

I smile.

I bet I’ll see her next payday.

Two-Fer with Jimmy Callaway

In honor of the first one hundred stories, Jimmy Callaway has a story titled, appropriately enough, ONE HUNDRED.

Following that will be his tribute to the second one hundred stories or the first two hundred, whichever you wish to see it as, that story is titled, yep, TWO HUNDRED.

Now the thing about these two stories is that ONE HUNDRED is exactly one hundred words long and TWO HUNDRED is exactly two hundred words long.

And if you don't think that's a difficult thing to pull off, try and make a story hang together on the strength of what you put in those one hundred or two hundred words.

I think you'll agree, it's an extremely tough thing to do. Jimmy pulls it off with both.

So enjoy these and let Jimmy know what you think.

WHAT WE PRAY FOR - KEITH RAWSON

And here’s the money shot!

Tits and ass, genital-to-genital contact, and luckily, his target wasn’t all that hard on the eyes. Not exactly porn star quality stiff silicon Double D tits and airbrushed perfection, but definitely a higher quality than the usual fatty sagginess you typically expect from middle-age targets. This was what Devin Holman and his colleagues lived for. There wasn’t any of that Sam Spade shit involved in P.I. work. Yeah, that’s what you got into the business for at first. Most of the jackasses—Holman included—who became private investigators got into it because they read too many crime novels growing up, thinking that they’d be chasing down murderers, international jewel thieves, foreign secrets agents—all that Dashell Hammett bullshit. Reality check. Cops chase real crooks, CIA chases spies and international jewel thieves, well, those bastards don’t even fucking exist.

No, P.I.s chased down pussy hounds and bored housewives; they ran background checks for ruthless multinational corporations on new potatoes to plant in cube farms. He remembered those days. His first year at Tillman & Associates, he rode formica, shifting through credit reports, drug test results and minor criminal records. He’d watch his colleagues coming in from all-nighters trailing the negligent spouses; the horny housewives and husbands and wished it was him out on the street. Surely being on an observation was more exciting than getting tension headaches from reading blinking computer print eight hours a day. Wrong, very wrong.

How long ago was it when old man Tillman sent him out on his first observation? Eight years ago? Nine years ago? Shit, Holman couldn’t even remember the case. He was sure that it was just some traveling salesman getting his dick wet when he was out of town. Maybe the wife grew suspicious of his business trips and hired the firm when she came down with a dose of the clap or a bush full of crabs. Whatever. All the cases, all the observations, they all blended into one big flabby fuck session after so many years on the job. And all you truly cared about was the money shot, the moment when the clothes came off and hopefully the drapes were left open wide enough so that you could snap off a couple of tightly focused shots and you could go home and go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Which was what was so great about this particular observation, it was only 9 o’clock and here was Mrs. Sam Miller stripping down to her God-given glory and getting ready to spread it to a man that wasn’t her husband. Mrs. Miller was the soon-to-be former trophy wife of a retired dot.com hotshot who was actually smart enough to get out and walk away with close to a billion stuffed in his bulging pockets before his intellectual property took a shit like all the rest. But, like most multimillionaire computer geeks, Miller was true to the stereotype and he married the first piece of trim that spent more than five minutes paying attention to him. The problem with Mrs. Miller is that she came to the marriage with a whole shitload of baggage. First off, when Mr. Miller met her, she was a stripper dancing at a club that Mr. Miller used to frequent with out-of-town clients and investors. Mrs. Miller was Mr. Miller’s favorite pole climber and he shoveled thousands of dollars into her g-string before he built up the courage to buy a three-carat ring. Mr. Miller wasn’t a stupid man, though; before the I DOs, Mr. Miller had the future Mrs. Miller sign a pre-nup. Mrs. Miller had no problem with it. It was a fair agreement that treated her right in case the two of them divorced. That is unless she fucked around on Mr. Miller, which, of course, she would never do.

Ten years into the marriage, apparently Mrs. Miller had never stepped out on her geek in shinning armor, but suddenly Mr. Miller started noticing Mrs. Miller’s behavior changing ever-so-slightly. Nothing that you would call out of the ordinary, just little things: hushed cell phone conversations, mysterious errands and shopping trips where she wouldn’t come back with anything from the mall. And, of course, the disturbing lack of sex in their marriage. From a physical standpoint, their marriage had always been a primal, animal thing. But for over six months, the sex had dwindled to a few awkward encounters and. two weeks ago, Mrs. Miller straight up refused his advances. That’s when he decided to sick Tillman & Associates on Mrs. Miller.

At this point in his story, Mr. Miller, the pathetic fuck, broke down in big snotty tears. Holman hated this part of the job. He wasn’t a priest, for Christ's sake, he wasn’t there to comfort the client and soothe their little emotional aches and pains. He was there to track the target and catch them doing what they weren’t supposed to be, so the client could avoid handing a huge divorce settlement. But, as his years on the job had taught him, it was better to attempt to give some form of sympathy; the referrals Mr. Miller might bring in if Holman did his job right could possibly keep him in Fat City for years to come. So he offered the snotty blubber pot a tissue and did hid best to assure Mr. Miller that Mrs. Miller probably wasn’t stepping out on him.

Yeah, right.

Holman expected the Miller observation to go on for weeks. Women are, by nature, a very secretive bunch, and when they don’t want the men in their lives to know something, they can keep it buried deep for years, sometimes decades. And when it came to having an affair, women were meticulous in their behaviors. Unlike men, women were extremely discrete. They shifted patterns, never meeting at the same restaurant, bar or hotel room twice. They’d park their cars in mall parking garages under the guise of spending yet another day shopping and cab it out to their true destination. One of Holman’s first street observations lasted nearly a month because the wife he was trailing seemed to have cars stashed all over the city and the only way he managed to finally catch her on film was that she made the mistake of having her boyfriend pick her up at the primary residence.

But Mrs. Miller completely surprised him on the first day of ops. She left the family home midday, dressed down in workout clothes and carrying a gym bag. Her first stop was an upscale gym, complete with gates and security guards semi-lethally armed with tasers. No access, so Holman parked a block away from the entrance gate, sipping coffee and listening to the police band on his scanner. Fortunately, the club had one way in and one way out, so there was no way he’d lose sight of Mrs. Miller’s Silver Beemer. He spotted her again three hours after she entered, no workout gear this time from his vantage point. They rolled along in 5 o’clock traffic, Holman sticking three or four car lanes behind at all times. They were headed in the opposite direction of the Millers' mini-mansion. She finally pulled into the parking lot of a chain sports bar called The Spot.

She stepped out of the car in full come-fuck-me gear: lose-fitting, low-slung skin-beige dress that was a near perfect match for her own bronze skin tone. Her long blonde hair was loose and feathered like some '70s poster girl sex goddess. She finished off the outfit with black Armani shades that seemed to cover half her face and pale brown suede calf-length boots. Holman nearly came in his pants as he watched her near-perfect ass roll gracefully with a well-practiced bump and grind with each step she took towards the suburban bar.

The bar was apparently a brief pit-stop and she strolled out with a man of undetermined stature fifteen minutes later. He kept his appearance well-concealed behind his own enormous pair of wrap-around shades, an LA Dodgers hat pulled low over his forehead and his body wrapped in what appeared to be a floor-length suede overcoat. Holman smelled golf hustler, a wealthy woman’s man-whore. The fugitive couple piled into Mrs. Miller’s vehicle and drove a couple of miles down the road to a Denny's, with an hourly rate motel next-door.

Holman couldn’t remember the last time he’d broken an observation down in less than 24 hours! Jesus, either Mrs. Miller didn’t have clue her husband was having her followed or she just didn’t care and was thinking her sport-fucking as a possible exit strategy from her marriage. After a quick snack of deep-fried garbage, the couple headed to the motel’s front office, rented a ground floor room and headed inside, politely groping each other. They left the dusty vertical blinds open for the entire world to see, and most importantly, for his camera to catch live and uncensored in lifelike digital glory.

Holman zoomed the lens a full ten to catch a righteous shot of Mrs. Miller, hands flat on the window ledge, bent over, back arched, slightly sagging but still close to perfect tits bounce back and forth threatening to smack her right on the chin as the golf hustler banged away from behind, still sporting shades, hat and trench coat, his hands roughly gripping her tanned shoulders for extra thrust. Holman’s heart felt like a cement mixer on overdrive. This shit was hot and it reminded him how long it had been since he’d last been laid. Fucking ages. The couple switched up positions, Mrs. Miller’s ass now planted on the window ledge, her firm calves parked on the mystery man’s shoulders. The hustler had Mrs. Miller’s back pinned against the window, his hands moving between rubbing her tits to running his fingers through her thick hair.

Holman had more than enough shots to send Mrs. Miller back to the day shift at some greasy strip bar but he couldn’t take his eyes off the show and was entertaining idea of unzipping and rubbing a quick one out. The masked man leaned in close, his hands sliding around Mrs. Miller’s neck, kissing her like he was trying to swallow her whole. Suddenly, he slammed her head into the motel window hard enough to cause the glass to spiderweb. The motherfucker’s hands were around her throat. He was choking her down, and not in your typical erotic asphyxiation style; he was straight-up trying to kill her.

Mrs. Miller’s fingers went straight to the hustler’s face and she started trying to claw at his eyes. Holman was convinced that he was witnessing a possible murder. Tillman & Associates policy when witnessing a possible act of violence was to call the proper authorities, wait for 5-O to roll in and assist in the investigation as a material witness. But, if he followed protocol, chances were the cops would show up way too late to stop the current situation. His only chance was to step in and stop the attack.

Holman bolted from his ride. The room was a good hundred yards away and he moved as fast as his two hundred-fifty pounds of deep-fried bulk would allow him. Jesus, he felt like he was going to drop of a coronary before he even hit the door. He’d count himself lucky to have enough energy to stop trench coat guy from choking the rest of Mrs. Miller’s life out of her body. Fucking A! This shit was awesome; this was straight up fucking Sam Spade/Mickey Spillane shit!

Holman hit the door with every ounce of his weight and momentum. He was almost surprised how easily the lock popped opened. As soon as Holman was inside the room, he turned on Mrs. Miller’s attacker, his eyes huge and hot breath ripping in and out of his lungs.

What the shit?

For the first time since the beginning of the observation, Holden got a good look at Mrs. Miller’s fuck buddy. The guy was an absolute fat ass, a blimp, and he kind of looked a little like Mr. Miller. Hell, just not a little, a lot. Holman turned his attention to Mrs. Miller. He’d expected her to be unconscious, at death’s door. She wasn’t. She was laughing like a little girl, her hands covering her mouth, her pale beautiful blue eyes shining with something not quite like happiness. Holman didn’t have time to react as the fat bastard smashed something hard and flat against the right side of his face. He crumpled to the floor and then lay flat on his back, the fat asshole standing over him gripping a thick crystal ashtray in both hands.

Holman’s eyes were heavy and he felt like every bone in his face was shattered and moving around with a life of there own. He couldn’t believe what was happening.

The fucking creep standing over him and getting ready to cave in his skull was Mr. Miller and the weeping tub of guts he half-heartedly attempted to comfort a few brief days ago had the biggest cock he’d ever seen.

Holy Christ, that thing had to be at least a foot and a half long.

These were Holman’s final thoughts.

*

Tammy Miller laid flat on her back, sweat-drenched and smoking, an annoyed squint creasing her brow.

“You know, honey,” Tammy’s husband Sam called from the bathroom, “we really should send Zach Tillman a nice Thank You basket.”

“Fuck, Zach Tillman. He should screen these guys a little more carefully before he sends them out.”

Sam stepped out of the bathroom, gently patting his thinning mousy brown hair dry with a cheap motel room towel. Sam truly wasn’t much to look at. He was at least one hundred pounds. overweight, practically blind and had some of the worst back acne Tammy had ever seen. But he was a wonderful husband, who indulged his wife’s every whim, including occasionally letting her screw recently-deceased Private Investigators. Plus, his cock could easily be classified as one of the Eight Wonders of the Natural World. That helped out a lot.

“You know, honey, Zach can’t exactly ask for guy’s penis size on a resume. Besides, the last two were far from disappointing. And at least this guy stayed hard until you were finished.”

“I know, sweetie,” she said as she stood up from the bed she’d been laying on and ground out her cigarette into what was left of Devin Holman’s skull in one smooth motion, before wrapping her arms around her husbands neck. “But, Jesus, look at him. He can’t be more than five, six inches tops, and my fingers did most of the work.”

“I know, honey. But you still had fun, didn’t you?”

“Of course.”

“And you know, I was thinking about what you said the other night. Maybe it is time we throw a woman into the mix?”

“Oh, you’ll love it, baby!”

“I’m sure. But I’m thinking lubrication’s going to be kind of a problem. I don’t think I can get some woman as worked up as you do with these guys.”

“Yeah, but maybe Zach has a lesbian on the payroll that he wouldn’t mind getting rid of."

“Yeah, maybe. It doesn’t hurt to ask.”

Two Hundred Stories!!!

Think about this, people.

We have now (or will in a moment or two) have hit the 200 mark.

When I started this nearly a year ago, I never expected to make it past the first ten. In fact, when I got the first story and then the second and the third and finally the fourth, I thought, "That's it. It was fun. Oh, well."

And that's because I had to wait a couple days to get another new story.

I was tearing my fucking hair out, going crazy, thinking that I had gotten into something and was way out of my depth.

You all changed that for me within the next couple days and then a day after that and then another day after that and so on.

You are all unfuckingbelievably talented and this is your milestone as well as mine.

Enjoy it.

Just one last factoid to blow your mind.

In June of this year, on June 11, as a matter of fact, I posted a Jake Hinkson story. That story was Story #100.

It took seven months to reach that mark.

Today is October 7 and it took a little less than four months to go another hundred.

Congratulations to us all and here's to another 200.

A Twist Of Noir 198 - Mark Joseph Kiewlak

JOINED AT THE HIP - MARK JOSEPH KIEWLAK

“If you have sex with me, I’ll tell you where the girl is.”

The apartment was dark. I could see the lights of the city far below. There were candles everywhere. Soft music playing.

“I can lead you to her,” she said. “But first you have to have sex with me.”

I didn’t say anything.

I moved toward her. She stepped out of the shadows and I saw that she was naked. A natural blonde.

“You want to find her, right? You want to find the girl.”

I kept moving closer. She held one hand behind her back. She kept her eyes on me all the way across the room.

“Her parents paid you to find her,” she said. “What if she doesn’t want to be found?”

She let me move in close then she took a step forward. “What if she’d rather die?” she said.

I stepped forward to meet her and punched her as hard as I could in the belly. She doubled over. A straight razor fell from her hand. I kicked it away. “You prick,” she gasped. “You fucking prick.”

I handcuffed her wrist to mine and yanked her to her feet. She slapped me across the face. “Big macho prick,” she said. “Useless prick.”

I slapped her back.

“I won’t tell where the girl is,” she said. “Fuck you, I won’t tell.”

I dragged her across the room out onto the terrace. The wind was whipping. The lights of the city were everywhere.

“What are you going to do?” she said. “Throw me over the fucking railing? Or do you want an audience to watch you fuck me?”

I yanked her toward the railing. She tried to pull away but we got there eventually.

“Big macho stud,” she said. “You won’t fuck me but you’ll kill me? You can’t kill me. You need me to find the fucking girl.”

I bent down to lift her legs. She started to club me on the back of the head. “Let me go, you fucking bastard. I’ll scream. I swear I’ll fucking scream to wake up the whole world.”

I lifted her off her feet and spun toward the railing. Just then she remembered the handcuffs. “Fuck you, you bastard. You can’t drop me. If I go, you go. You fucking outsmarted yourself, you macho prick.”

I lifted her over the railing and let go. She dropped like a stone. Then the cuffs caught and nearly pulled my arm from the socket. I lost three layers of skin from my wrist. She was left hanging by one arm, naked above the city.

“Jesus Christ,” she said. “Jesus Christ, pull me up.”

I braced my arm on the railing and held her there.

“What do you want?” she said. “I told you I’d fuck you. I’ll give you what you want.”

My wrist felt numb. Hers might’ve been broken.

“Jesus Christ, pull me up.”

I didn’t move.

“You want Rudy?” she said. “I’ll give you Rudy.”

I let her hang there.

“He’s in the bedroom,” she said. “I’m giving you Rudy.”

Both our wrists were starting to bleed.

“Jesus Christ, I’m giving you Rudy. Pull me up.”

The wind was making my teeth chatter.

“Didn’t you hear me?” she said. “Rudy’s in the fucking bedroom. I’m giving him to you.”

She’d bitten her lip and there was blood running down her chin. “It was his idea,” she said. “It was Rudy’s fucking idea to take the kid. He wanted the fucking money.”

Her fingers were being crushed together and I was afraid she might slip out of the handcuffs.

“It was for the fucking money,” she said. "Where’s our fucking money?”

Her hand slipped a little through the opening.

“Pull me up,” she said. “Pull me up and I’ll tell you where the girl is.”

In a second, I was going to lose her. I pulled her up. Her teeth were chattering so badly she couldn’t speak. She collapsed in on herself, holding her wrist curled to her chest. She began pounding on my leg.

“You fucking crazy bastard,” she said. “You insane prick.”

I started to drag her back toward the apartment. She yelped in pain as the cuff yanked her wrist. I took her by the hair and dragged her. She stood up then and came on her own. “Keep your fucking hands off me,” she said. “Keep them off.”

We moved off the terrace and back into the apartment. I slid the door shut behind us. She fell backwards against the glass, dizzy and unable to stand on her own. I put a hand under her arm to brace her. Her lip was still bleeding. She tried to push me away but she was too weak. I lifted her away from the glass. Her body left a heat imprint upon its surface.

“Fucking prick sadist,” she said. “Fucking torture women for a living.”

We moved into the bedroom. I reached for the light switch but couldn’t find it. I was a bit dizzy myself. She’d hit me pretty hard on the back of the head.

“Rudy’s in here,” she said. “Rudy’s on the bed.”

I found a lamp and switched it on. A middle-aged man was sprawled naked atop the bedspread. His throat was cut. There was a pool of blood seeping into the sheets beneath him. It hadn’t all seeped in yet. He’d been dead only a few minutes. His eyes were wide and staring up at us.

“He was a fucking prick,” she said. “He deserved it.” She moved in close to me. She put her arm around my midsection. She looked up into my eyes. “It’s just us now,” she said. “It can be just us. They gave you the money, didn’t they? Didn’t they?”

I felt her hand reaching around my waist. She lifted her head and pressed her mouth to mine. I tasted blood.

“Forget the girl,” she whispered in my ear. “Forget all about the girl. I’ll fuck you like you’ve never been fucked. I’ll fuck your brains out. Then I’ll do it again. I’ll do it as many times as you want.”

There was a gun tucked in the small of my back. She pushed her breasts against me and her lips closed around mine. She put her hand ever-so-gently on the butt of the gun. I put my hand around her throat and lifted her on her tiptoes. Her hand slid off the gun. She gagged once then again. She clawed the side of my face. She tried to say something. I loosened my grip a little.

“There’s a... safe,” she said. “There’s a safe... in the living room. Behind the cabinet.”

I tightened my grip again. “I’ll... I’ll open it... for you.”

I let go of her. I could still taste the blood in my mouth.

I turned her toward the door and maneuvered her back into the living room. The candles gave off a scent of jasmine. The music was jazz.

When we got to the cabinet, she fell on her knees before me. “We can run away,” she said. She reached up and started to unbuckle my pants. “We can run away and we can fuck all day and night. We can do it doggie style. I’ll take it in the ass. Anything you want.”

I grabbed her injured hand and squeezed it in my fist. Her face got red. She tried to pull away. I let her go and pushed her aside. I got hold of the glass display cabinet and shoved it aside, toppling it, sending knick-knacks and china crashing to the floor, shattering into a thousand pieces at her bare feet. I yanked her toward me through the shards of glass. I got her by the hair and slammed the side of her face against the cold metal of the safe. The door was six feet tall by two feet wide. It was a walk-in, built right into the wall. I could tell by the furnishings that it was a man’s apartment. Rudy’s no doubt.

“I won’t open it,” she said. “I’m giving you one more chance. One more chance to be with me.”

I pressed the palm of my hand to the side of her face and began to apply pressure. Her face was being crushed against the door of the safe. The lock was right in front of her, at eye level. She raised her hand and began to turn the dial. I heard the tumblers click. I pulled hard on the handle and the door opened a crack. I led her by the arm back out onto the terrace.

“What are you doing?” she said. “I gave you what you wanted.”

I took the key from my pocket and unlocked the handcuffs. I slid them through the railing and snapped them onto both her wrists. I turned and went back inside.

“What are you doing, you fucking prick? Get me out of these. I gave you what you fucking wanted. I would’ve given you everything.”

I grabbed the door to the safe with both hands and pulled it open. I took a candle and stepped inside. It was smaller than a jail cell. It was smaller than a broom closet. The little girl was hunched against the wall, still in her Sunday dress. She’d soiled herself many times. She held her knees to her chest and hid her face between them. I bent and touched her arm lightly. She pulled back. “It’s okay,” I said. “I’m here to take you home.” She raised her head slowly. She had been crying and now more tears filled her eyes. I held my arms out and, when she didn’t move, I moved toward her and lifted her gently and cradled her to me. I backed out of the safe and held her tight against my chest. I glanced toward the terrace. The handcuffs were hanging empty from the railing. There were startled screams from the street below.

A Twist Of Noir 197 - Michael Kechula

BAD INTUITIONS - MICHAEL KECHULA

“How much was in the safe, honey?” Ann asked, while cleaning her pistol.

“Fifty thousand,” said Alex.

“No way!”

“It’s true,” he said. “Not only that. Look what I found in the safe.” He tossed a clump of papers on the motel bed.

“What’s this?”

“A plan for a coin shop heist. It’s supposed to happen in two days. That’s why so much money was in the safe. Probably pay for the driver, and whatever.”

“Oh Hell!” Ann yelled. “You musta robbed mob money. I don’t want my share.”

“But with this you can get that fur coat and diamond tennis bracelet you want so much. Well, that means more for me,” Alex said.

“Yeah. More bullets for you when they find out.”

“How the hell will they find out?” he asked. “We’re unknowns around here. Listen, I stopped for coffee and read the plan. It’s pure genius. Somebody’s gonna hit a coin shop that’s loaded with gold and silver ingots without serial numbers. So, I got a brilliant idea.”

“Like what?”

“We’ll use their plan and pull the robbery before they do.”

“Wait,” she said. “We’re talking heavy stuff here. You rob the safe of a company---probably one of the mob’s legit operations. You get fifty thou, plus a plan for a heist. Bad enough you took their cash, but you also took their plan. Wake up! We’re talking mob, here. They’ll go ballistic. They’ll turn this city upside down looking for us.”

“Let them. We’ll be in Mexico on our honeymoon.” He grabbed her and kissed her hard.

“I love you so much, Alex,” she said. “You know how protective I am about you. Listen to me. I got a bad feeling about this. Please…for me…for the sake of our future life together…take it all back. We got enough to live on for six months.”

“Are you crazy? You want me to go there, open the safe and put everything back?”

“Yeah. Right now.”

“You going soft on me, Love?”

“No way,” she said. “There’s plenty of other jobs to pull. Forget this one. Listen to what I’m saying.”

“Are you having one of your intuitions?”

“Yeah. It’s a bad one. Take it back. Real quick.”

Alex trusted Ann’s intuition. It’d gotten them out of a few pickles over the past few months. Without another word, he dropped everything into a black laundry bag, kissed her passionately, and left.

Intuition or no, Alex really hated to see a good plan go to waste. Why should somebody else get all them gold and silver ingots? Charlie in Fresno can melt them and cast them into palm-sized bars. They’ll be easy to sell. Plus we can use the extra money now that we’re gonna get married. I wanna get her that beautiful band she likes so much.

Passing Kinko’s copy shop, he was struck with an idea.

Alex woke Ann. “Look, Sweetie. I copied the plan. Now there’s no link between the plan and us. So there’s nothing to worry about. We can pull the job tonight. And then we’ll head to Mexico and get married.”

Throwing her arms around him, she said, “I’m gonna marry the most brilliant crook in the whole world.”

She didn’t tell him her intuition nagged even worse.

They spent a few hours studying the plan. At noon, they drove downtown to check out the coin shop. Alex occupied the owner by buying a silver commemorative coin, while Ann looked the place over.

“It’s just like the drawings in the plan,” she said. “You were right. That plan is dynamite.”

“We’ll hit it at midnight,” Alex said.

*

“Rise and shine, Honey,” she said. “It’s time to get those sweet ingots.”

On the way to the coin shop, a dozen fire engines raced by.

“Wow. Must be a huge one,” Alex said.

Street barriers blocked them several blocks from the coin shop.

“What’s going on, Officer?” Alex asked.

“Whole block’s on fire.”

“Oh God, my uncle’s coin shop is up that way,” Ann said with faked alarm.

“That’s toast, along with a bunch of other stores,” the cop said.

“Sonovabitch!” Alex yelled as he turned the car toward the Interstate. “Talk about rotten luck. We get a chance to make a real killing, and this happens. It just ain’t right. I had fifty grand in my hands before you made me take it back. Now we got nothing for all that work.”

“Fate,” she said. “It wasn’t meant to be. Let’s leave for Mexico right now. Please.”

As they drove toward the border, Alex tuned the radio to a news station.

A newscaster was interviewing the Police Chief.

“We think it started in a coin dealer’s shop,” the Chief said. “The arsonist used a Molotov cocktail. That’s why the fire spread so fast. Right now, three people are dead, including a fireman who has a wife and four kids. And the fire isn’t out yet.”

“Hear that?” Alex asked.

“Yeah. Tough break”

“What’s that up ahead?”

“Looks like a roadblock,” she answered. “Must be a hundred cop cars.”

“No sweat. They ain’t got nothing on us,” Alex said, as they approached the barriers.

Suddenly, cops brandishing pistols ordered them out of the car.

“What the hell is this?” Alex yelled.

“You’re under arrest for suspicion of arson and murder.”

“You’re making a big mistake. I’m gonna sue you for false arrest!”

“We have a witness. He wrote down your license plate. You have the right to remain silent...”

*

While cyanide gas filled the chamber, Ann wished she’d never gone to the coin store an hour before they were supposed to rob it.

“I didn’t have a choice,” she muttered in the rising fog. “I hadda do it so we could get married and have children.”

Drawing her last breath, she screamed, “If I didn’t burn it down, we woulda got killed during the robbery!”
